BACK AND NECK PROGRAM

Most medical schemes now offer you a back and neck rehabilitation program that provides you or your registered dependants with appropriate treatment to manage your back and neck pain. Positive outcomes include improved flexibility, as well as reduced pain and stiffness, leading to a more productive life.

Benefits for this program do not come out of your day-to-day medical savings, they come from a different benefit portion known as the “risk benefit” which you can take advantage of, and you do not need to deplete your medical savings, or pay out of your pocket.

Acute Pain Management

Acute pain is temporary pain caused by injury. Your treatment plan for acute pain may include manual therapy, assisted stretching, ultrasound, acupuncture, and laser, among others. Exercise is good for the majority of Musculo Skeletal (MSK) pain conditions, but not all exercise is equal. Physiotherapists are skilled in assessing and treating these temporary and acute painful MSK conditions caused by injury. Physiotherapists can help relieve your pain.

Treatment is effective for acute pain relief in conditions such as neck and back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle and ligament sprains and strains, and many others. Research shows that getting pain relief in the early stages of an injury helps speed up recovery. Unrelieved pain can interfere with the healing process and result in more problems. Your physiotherapist will also guide the rehabilitation of your injury and show you techniques to help prevent re- injury. This will minimize the chance of experiencing the same pain again.

CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

Assessment and treatment by a physiotherapist who is skilled in chronic pain management can help. Your physiotherapist will help you better understand your pain, with pain self-management strategies, and with pain-relieving techniques. Together, you will develop a recovery plan with the goals of reducing your pain, improving your function, and enhancing the quality and enjoyment of your life. Your treatment plan should include a strong educational component and instruction on breathing, body awareness and relaxation techniques. Therapeutic exercises are a critical part of your treatment. These will help you get back to normal and more comfortable movement patterns. Your physiotherapist will also help you to understand what triggers your pain and how to manage these triggers.

Hands-on treatment will be an important part of your rehabilitation program and will allow you to perform the physical exercises with greater ease and less pain. Research shows that patients whose pain is managed by an interdisciplinary healthcare team will benefit from significant pain reduction. Interdisciplinary approaches to chronic pain management result in a 14% to 60% reduction in chronic pain, or 20% to 30% pain reduction on average. Interdisciplinary approaches to chronic pain management also increase mobility and physical activity by approximately 65%, as compared to a 35% increase reported by patients receiving conventional medical care.

Rehabilitation after surgery

Surgery is generally the final step in any problem and is only undertaken when more conservative measures; such as physiotherapy, have failed to produce the desired or optimal result. In most cases, Orthopaedic Surgeons ensure that their clients have received a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment and course of treatment before other interventions or surgery are contemplated.

PHYSIO AT HOME

Why get Physio at home?

We understand that some people may not be able to travel the distance to our clinics yet still require treatment and assistance from a Physiotherapist.

People prefer home physiotherapy services for several reasons; sometimes people are too injured, too sick, or in too much pain to leave the house, whereas in other cases people simply prefer to receive physio treatment at home where they are most comfortable.

Our Physiotherapists regularly provide home visit services to patients with stroke, severe injuries, critical illnesses, and wheelchair bound patients. Home physiotherapy is also quite appropriate for post-surgical patients like hip or knee replacements, as well as those with falls and balance problems.

Furthermore, palliative care for positioning can be learned at home visits and of course, all the injuries and conditions that we regularly treat in our clinics can be treated at home.

Physiotherapy at home allows the rest of the family to be involved in the treatment and gain a better understanding of the condition, as well as giving them an opportunity to ask the physio any questions and learn how they can help.

Please note, home visits are dependent on the availability of staff.

Please contact our office to discuss a plan for your physio home visit.

Acupuncture (Dry needling)

Acupuncture is a practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation. Each acupuncture needle produces a tiny injury at the insertion site, and although it’s slight enough to cause little to no discomfort, it’s enough of a signal to let the body know it needs to respond.

HEALTHCARE CONSULTING

Organizations around the world are preparing for the next generation of healthcare services: a consumer-centric, prevention-focused system that cares for patients. Healthcare companies face several challenges today: changes in customer behaviour, regulatory demands, and market dynamics.

Companies in the healthcare industry recognize the need to reduce costs while delivering greater value. The pressure to lower costs is mainly due to modifications in government policies. However, consumers, patients, and healthcare providers are demanding similar cost-reduction measures. The result of this is that all sections of the healthcare industry must change to adapt in the evolving environment. These professionals are management analysts who review the profits, efficiency, and structure of the organization and suggest ways of improvement

Physio and Wellness consultants work with these companies to innovate, drive better value for patients, and reduce the complexity and cost of operating systems. We also provide health organizations with professional guidance spanning a wide range of services, and our clients typically engage our consulting services as short-term experts to work on “cases”. Cases present specific operational or commercial challenges or questions that our clients face imminently. We then deploy case teams who work on analysing the situation that presented the challenge at hand and help resolve it through well-informed recommendations.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Employees are a company’s most important investment. When a team member gets sick or injured at work, getting him or her back to health is always a pressing priority. However, making sure that employees don’t get hurt or sick in the first place is always the main goal. Occupational Health is designed to protect employees from potential risks and hazards on the job, assisting with everything from injury prevention to injury care. Regardless of what type of business a company operates, understanding occupational health and having a program in place are key to reducing overall health costs, improving productivity and ensuring a safe workplace.
The ultimate goal of occupational health is to prevent workplace-related illnesses and injuries through a variety of actions, including:

  • Encouraging safety in the workplace through safer work practices.
Ensuring that employees are using ergonomically proper methods and actions.
  • Monitoring overall health in the workplace, and looking for opportunities for improvement.
  • Supporting employees who are struggling with illness or absences related to sickness.
  • Providing ongoing mental health support for those with work or home stressors.

Undernutrition – inadequate energy or nutrients – continues to affect many people worldwide, while rates of overweight and obesity are also rising in all countries.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP), also known as Employee Wellness Program (EWP), is a valuable program that provides long term benefits to employees which in turn provides long term benefits to your business as a whole. A healthy workforce is a happy workforce, is a productive workforce and is less likely to take time off from work due to stress-related problems

Some of the conditions treated include:

Back Pain & Painful Joints

Painful joints can stop you in your tracks, making it difficult to go about your typical day. The reasons behind this discomfort vary, but they all come down to how we hold ourselves while standing, moving, and – most important of all – sitting.

Back Pain & Painful Joints can limit your movements and capabilities. If you do not do anything about your pains, they can get worse, spread, and limit you further. This is usually because the muscles around your immediate area of pain have tensed up to protect that one spot. That expansion limits movement and can turn one clenched muscle under your shoulder blade into a painful shoulder and a tension headache.

Sports Injuries

Exercising is good for you, but sometimes injuries occur while playing sports or training. Accidents, poor training practices or incorrect gear can cause injuries. Injuries can also occur when the person is not in shape or does not warm up or stretch correctly before exercising. If you do get HURT, STOP PLAYING! Continuing to play or exercise can cause more harm.

Treatment often begins with the RICE method (Rest | Ice | Compression | Elevation), to relieve pain, reduce swelling, and speed healing.

Workplace Injuries

Workplace injuries are injuries or illnesses that occur in relation to an employee’s job. Generally, a workplace injury occurs because the work environment is unsafe (the premises are dangerous, the equipment is defective, or the environment is contaminated with hazardous chemicals). In addition, jobs that require repetitive or difficult movements (eg. factory labor or heavy lifting) may cause injury.

Arthritis & Gout

Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Symptoms may come and go. They can be mild, moderate or severe. They may stay about the same for years, but may progress or get worse over time. Severe arthritis can result in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb stairs. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes.

Stroke

A stroke is a “brain attack”. It can happen to anyone at any time. It occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. How a person is affected by their stroke depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged. People who have larger strokes may be permanently paralyzed on one side of their body or lose their ability to speak. Some people recover completely from strokes, but more than 2/3 of survivors will have some type of disability.

Bronchitis & Pneumonia

A nagging cough or slight wheeze may barely register in the course of our busy days, but it’s critically important to pay attention to even mild symptoms. It is important to pay attention to these symptoms as they could be the first signs of lung disease, including COPD, asthma and lung cancer. Knowing the early warning signs of lung disease can help you receive treatment before the disease becomes serious or even life threatening

Lifestyle Diseases (e.g. Hypertension & Diabetes)

Lifestyle diseases include atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke; obesity and type 2 diabetes; and diseases associated with smoking and alcohol and drug abuse. Regular physical activity helps prevent obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, colon cancer, and premature mortality.
